The Sounds of the Sounds of Science is a score written by Yo La Tengo for filmmaker Jean Painlevé. It contains 78 minutes of instrumental music to accompany his eight short documentary-style films shot underwater.

The plot is based on two parallel events, with detective Steve Carella at the center. He is assigned a difficult case: the day before, millionaire Scott, the owner of a luxurious villa, hanged himself in a small windowless room, having locked himself in from the inside in a very clever way.
